Kindly Woven Artist Feature: Lisa Mabey and May blanket.

There’s a quiet kind of art that lingers: simple, steady, and easy to live with. That’s the feeling behind Lisa Mabey’s work. Her designs don’t shout for attention. They offer it gently, through flowing botanicals, balanced forms, and a palette that feels calm and familiar. Rooted in a deep love for nature and the everyday beauty around her, her work carries a spirit of gentle observation. It’s graceful but grounded, intricate without losing its sense of ease. With Kindly Woven, Lisa has brought that sensibility to cloth, translating her painterly vision into two woven designs that feel as comforting as they are composed.

Meet the Artist

Lisa grew up in rural Idaho, surrounded by open fields, farmland, and the kinds of wide spaces that leave room for imagination. Early on, she found joy in creative hobbies, from paper crafts to sewing, but what stayed constant was her love for learning a skill deeply. “I’m not afraid to get messy and fail,” she says. “It’s been a beautiful adventure learning and growing along the way.”

Today, Lisa is an artist and surface designer, working mostly with organic florals that reflect the natural world she’s always loved. Her style feels intuitive and loose, yet quietly structured, evolving from a process of both play and persistence. Whether painting, sketching, or building patterns, Lisa trusts the rhythm of her creative energy to guide the work.

Why Woven?

Textiles have always been part of Lisa’s life. As a longtime sewist, she gravitated toward fabrics with texture with woven details that felt richer than what prints could offer. “Wovens are the luxury products of the textile world in my mind,” she says. So when she started designing, translating her art into woven form felt like a natural step.

Working with Kindly Woven gave her a new way to explore that process and brought a few unexpected lessons along the way. “I was afraid my organic florals wouldn’t translate to wovens,” Lisa shared. But learning the process helped her understand how to adjust while staying true to her vision. What surprised her most was the intricacy of it all, how much thought goes into every thread to make the artwork come alive.

Design Inspiration

Lisa has created two blankets with Kindly Woven. The first, Isobel, reimagines a traditional damask pattern with more space and softness. Birds perch on branches within a blossoming tree, looking for a place to nest. A quiet symbol of safety, care, and home.

The second, May, takes inspiration from the aster flower. Hardy yet bright, asters are often overlooked, but Lisa sees in them a kind of everyday resilience. “So often we’re asked to be both tough and gentle,” she says. “Asters show that it can be done beautifully.”

The Creative Process

Throughout this project, Lisa kept coming back to one idea: connection. She’s experienced firsthand how often the artist behind a product is invisible, especially in textiles. Being recognized for her contribution means more than credit, it’s a way to connect with the person who ends up using her work. “It bridges the gap between me sitting down to paint and the person wrapped up in a blanket.”

Final Thoughts

Lisa hopes these blankets bring people comfort, calm, and maybe even a sense of being understood. Whether someone is gifting Isobel or May to a friend, a parent, or someone moving through grief, she wants it to feel meaningful. “I’m honored every time someone allows my work into their lives,” she says.

In her own home, the blankets live on the back of the couch, ready to offer warmth on an ordinary day. And that’s how she sees them best used: as part of real, daily life, helping people feel just a little more at ease.
